[ music | The English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom ]

The problem with new converse is that it takes an age to get them looking good.

Y'all be jealous y'hear [01 Jun 2006|10:06pm]
I just booked two tickets for this -

John Zorn - Crowley At The Crossroads
Featuring Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, Joey Baron & London Sinfonietta
18 June 2006 / 19:30
Barbican Hall

Aleister Crowley's reputation as an outsider, poet and magician is infamous. Tonight Zorn invokes the spirit of Crowley in two startling and very different world premieres for voice and ensemble.

Evocation of a Neophyte and How the Black Arts were Revealed unto Her by the Demon Baphomet brings the mystery of Enochian Ritual into the Barbican through a beautiful new work for soprano soloist, mixed choir, harp, contrabassoon and percussion, performed by musicians from the London Sinfonietta, conducted by Brad Lubman.

Moonchild, Zorn's most recent work, is a hardcore song cycle scored for voice, bass and drums. Featuring vocalist Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomaf) singing in preverbal language accompanied by two longtime Zorn alumni, Trevor Dunn and Joey Baron, and conducted by Zorn himself, this is an intense new compositional direction for Zorn, and takes rock to some startling new places.

Also featured in the evening is a new film of Crowley paintings and drawings by the legendary Kenneth Anger.

behold, one of the greatest album covers in history

a very nice day was had today, i spent much of the day with anna in a park in bethnal green where wine was consumed and i was introduced to tom and things were spoken about and the sun shone.

such a nice day was it that i actually got a bit of a headache from sitting in the sun too much but all was made better with pills.

not done a proper update in fucking ages so here goes. going back to uni after a year out was fairly interesting. i'd forgotten about the lower levels of hygiene need to survive as a student but i have been doing pretty well considering i've not really had any moeny since we got back from SA.

We both miss SA so much, the most amazing place we've been to. I particularly miss the long warm evenings in BsAs, wandering the streets and sitting in cafes talking about stuff with nia. I miss our little bookshop/cafe and the wine and cigarettes. I don't miss the huge bugs though.

Now it looks like we're going to be stuck in London for maybe upto a year which will test our resolve. fucking southerners! Nia's got a job there in a press agency and i will be joining her as soon as i've got these last three essays and single exam out of the way. (i should have everything done by the end of the month) i was down there this weekend and we had such a good time, i think it was because we were together rather than the setting, in one weekend i seem to have exhausted all the cool things to do in london. when i get a job too we'll both be working so hard that i doubt we'll have much time to go out but at least we'll be able to save some money for our return up north.

the talk lately has been about moving to paris so maybe there will be a slight detour before i return.

other places to go:

Lisbon (i will come vanda, i promise, i just don't know when)
Barcelona (I'm coming to smoke all your weed Kiko)
Venice (i'd like to save this for the honeymoon, although actually i'd prefer somewhere like milan or florence but we'll see)
I NEEEEEED to go back to Buenos Aires, i'd like a year in SA and then we could spend a good 8 months in BA and four months going back to Lima to see francis and santiago and vina to see carlos and gisella)

I'm so excited about all the political developments over there, the list of left leaning governments keeps growing and you can see the americans looking scared.

I've been neglecting my music listening lately but here's what's been on my playlist lately:

Pretty Girls Makes Graves - Elan Vital (i'll have to give another couple of listens but it's not as good as new romance)
John Martyn - Solid Air/Inside Out (a couple of golden oldey records but quite beautiful in a mumbly way)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abatoir Blues (i've rediscovered my love for Nick cave after reading And the Ass Saw The Angel)
Ikara Colt - Chat and Business (this takes me back to those heady days of 2002 when music held so much promise, and what happens, fuck all)
Barry Adamson - Moss Side Story (bassist for Magazine and the Bad Seeds, for those of you who don't know, Cisco, you should check this guy out)

It's John's birthday weekend from tomorrow until we pass out and so I will be taking a break from essay writing. (The representation of magical books in Marlowe's Dr Faustus, Authorship of Carole Reed's The Third Man and Literary Games In Georges Perec's Life: A User Manual) It should be good to see some of the old guys and see how they're getting on.
